Made in 1904 Aboard the "Sunbeam'

In 1904 Clifford W. Ashley a New Bedford artist, went on a whaling expedition to the west coast of Africa aboard the "Sunbeam".

On that trip, he saw things that inspired him to do these very detailed illustrations.

They were published in March 1906 for a story called "The Blubber Hunters" in "Harper's Monthly Magazine".
