Below find four photographs of the Merchants and Merchants National Bank throughout it's history.
Just below is the Merchants Bank on the corner of Purchase and William streets in 1914 after Purchase Street had been widened. At the very bottom of this page is a Merchants $5.00 Bill issued in 1864.

Below is the1914 period when the widening of Purchase caused the owners of the bank to decide to totally demolish the building and rebuild a new bank rather than to remodel by cutting 16 1/2 feet from the eastern side on Purchase street. |

Below is the Merchants National Bank on the corner of Purchase and William Streets prior to the widening of Purchase Street.
Established as the "Merchants Bank" in 1825 it re-organized in 1865 as the "Merchants National Bank" and moved to this building it had built in 1893 - 1894 on Purchase and William Streets.
On
June 16, 1913, it was voted that Purchase Street was to be widened by 16 1/2 feet.
By 1914, it had the new building above.

Below is the second location of the Merchants Bank that was reorganized in 1865
It shared the building with the Mechanics Bank that occupied the north (left) part of the building.
Later it became the Fisherman's Pension Fund Building. |
